The history of Fieracavalli spans over a century and represents a crucial reference point for horse breeding and the trade of equine products. The origins of this tradition date back to 1772, when the architect Bibbiena designed and oversaw the construction of the first fairground dedicated to horses, mules, donkeys, and hinnies. For over a century, this venue hosted equestrian competitions and markets for high-quality specimens, until the modern fair history began in 1898 with the first edition of the Horse and Agriculture Fair.
From a simple equine market, the event has experienced exponential growth over the years, officially becoming an International Fair in 1950 and establishing itself as a global leader in the equestrian scene. Verona’s strategic geographical location at the crossroads of major European trade routes has further contributed to making the city a crucial hub for commerce and cultural exchange.
Fieracavalli has had a profound impact on the region, spurring the development of numerous small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses, initially created to support the equestrian world and its diverse activities. The event has managed to keep alive the ancient traditions linked to horses, especially after World War II, when rapid economic and agricultural growth led to the animal’s partial marginalization from daily life.
